working on the final "love" block print... 18 prints and only 3 are passable.... two colors is difficult... Now I know why these things are so expensive. For every print you see the artist has thrown away a dozen...

Printing on Rice Paper
Tested a very expensive sheet of Japanese block printing paper today. Remarkable for how soft it was. there in lied the difficulty! Getting it on and off the block without it folding in and smudging the edges was nearly impossible. Only one good print in the six...
The 1/2=0 is slogan I came up with for a line from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous "Half Measures Availed us Nothing.... in other words half the effort did not yield half the results. Half in yielded no results. It isn't really my experience with the program but I like the idea that the more you put in the more you will get out of the program, or anything really. My experience though is that a lot can be gained from doing a little prayer work, attending a few meetings and doing some step work.... lots of people cost until they fully get it.

Preparing for a new series of watercolor portraits of people I admire
Marian Anderson
The aim in life is "not to be a party to a thing which,
when the God Lord calls you, you won't have an
answer." 1957
Anderson extends her advice not just to race relations but all aspects of human society, urging people to reach out to any "black sheep" relatives they have and try to understand them, for in so doing they may very well "save a soul."
I think she was talking about learning to accept people on a human level.

2008 RMIT Application Portfolio
Warning, there are a few penises drawn here and there in this gallery.
In 2008 I applied and was accepted to the masters in contemporary painting program at RMIT (Hong Kong campus.
As I prepare a much improved portfolio for PNCA I find these watercolours and drawings laughable yet endearing.
The fascinating thing is that I can already see what would develop into my style in these pics, especially the water colours.
I cant imagine presenting such an unpolished portfolio to anyone now but maybe that is what they liked about it.

Fujiarts.com awesome site. LOVE woodblock prints. amazing
Fuji Arts from Ann Arbor is an amazing Japanese wood block print dealer. Love their website. I wanna learn all I can about this stuff. Their inks and paper last centuries. Some of the prints I saw at the Portland Art Museum are 300 + years old and still vibrant. Amazing.

Original Kamisaka Sekka (1866 - 1942) Japanese Woodblock print
First Edition Sekka Butterfly
Series; 1000 Butterflies
Cho Senshu
This Original, Sekka Woodblock Print - An incredible Kamisaka Sekka design from one of his fantastic contemporary print series. This print and the others offered in our auctions tonight are from a single series done by Sekka in 1904. Our original prints are from an original early 20th century release of the album. These beautiful butterfly designs are very rare and difficult to come by. These original Sekka prints offered tonight are incredible contemporary designs printed using the highest quality printing techniques, some with mica embellishments. They represent the pinnacle of Sekka’s career. Sekka woodblock prints are very rare these days and our offerings this evening are a great opportunity to collect works by this 20th century master.
Artist - Kamisaka Sekka (1866-1942)
Size - 12 1/2" x 9 3/4"
Condition - In excellent condition overall as shown with fine original color and detail. No holes, tears, damage, repairs or other issues to report. Beautiful old paper. Some light paper remnants remain on reverse at left and right edges, edges only, from folio removal (not an issue). Note; the print was folded vertically as are all Sekka butterfly prints, now flattened. Sekka butterfly prints were folio presentations, so, all butterfly prints have this folio fold. An excellent example of Sekka's butterfly prints and a good choice for the discerning collector.

mail me your thoughts and memories of moon river diner
The Ebook version of Sand and Sky has sold more units than I expected. The images are very compelling. The process had lead me to the decision to work on a book around photos I took then I was stranded in Hong Kong in 2008. There are nearly 3000 photos for me to sort through. I expect it to take another month.
I have found the Hong Kong book healing. As I take a close look at each picture I am able to put certain things to rest. Further the proceeds of the book will go to people who helped me get back home. Its a way for me to get money to a few people who have been very patient. Some of the pics are amazing. I expect it to sell well.
With this in process I am already thinking about the next book, a book based on photos taken of Moon River Diner. I'm hoping Michael Giannini, my partner and maybe even Linn, Mark and Marybelle Hu will participate. There is a lot of good that can be taken from Moon River's experience. I lot to be shown. Maybe this might be a way to finally get the Hu's a small return on their investment. They shelled out a lot of money and bought little more than a container full of troubles.
If you were a moon river diner employee or patron and have antidotes or thoughts you want to send or even pictures you would like included please post them to this blog or email them to me at info@artofgdds.com. I will be working them into the supportive text.

Leslie Jordan: My Trip Down the Pink Carpet (Trailer)
Just watched this and found it very inspirational. a celebration of honesty. I want this quality of glorifying life thru the details to encoupas my new book.
starting a new book. Pictures of hope by a Hong Kong Drifter
In 2008/9 I was stranded in Hong Kong. Couldn't go back to Shanghai, couldn't afford the price of a plane ticket to Oregon (home). 39 years old, penniless and stranded. I had lost everything in Shanghai. I still had a phone with an 8 megapixle camera (a luxury left over from better times) and I occupied myself, found hope for myself in documenting the wonderful city I was stuck in. This will be the first picture in the book, which will be basically a collection of photos taken at the time. Me in the tiny hostel room I rented at first in Tsim Sha Tsui in a shirt I had stolen from a vendor, a self given haircut (with really bad scissors borrowed from the front desk and a beard due to saving funds (no money for a razor) and water lifted from a convenience store. When I look at this knowing how lonely and destitute I truly was, I can't help but see a joyful determination to survive in my face. I will survive! I will smile down my dire circumstances and survive.
The end result were 1000s of amazing pictures of people and places in Hong Kong. And yes, my survival.

herb and dorothy, very interesting
Just watched this film and feel guilty I didn't see it some time ago. I wont wait to so long to see 50X50. They made a life of collecting art and artists akin to the way i have made art my life. Their generosity is compelling and very moving. Its amazing what unselfish love can do. They have given it all to the public to be viewed and discussed. The best thing about the collection is that so much of it is not easily digestible. Its work that represents, in many cases the artist's process or concepts that require thought and review. Not the stuff typically spoon fed to the public for free.

Cost of education
Many years ago I made a critical miscalculation . I thought I could drop out of OSU and come back to it later. 25 years later, after several failed attempts, I am still trying to figure out how to get back. How to get that done for myself. Today as I read over the info for several different programs it was the cost that overwhelmed me. 23 to 28,000 a year? Even if I could finance it how can I earn enough after to justify spending 90,000? How does anyone? Is there something I am missing here? How can make this work?
Maybe I'll throw a benefit art auction for myself..,,

Talking sculpture today made me think of my two fav artists, movana chen and antonio mak
Movana Chen is a vibrant artist who weaves her sculptures from paper, Antonio Mak passed on some time ago but his small, textured pieces are raw and full of life. I plan on owning one some day. He was remarkable for being able to build a scene. He threw art shows in old buildings, etc... he lived his art

PNCA
Took a look at the Pacific Northwest Collage of Art today. It felt like home. I keep asking myself "why school?" Not sure I have the answer yet. I just want to do it. I want to be there. I want to give myself the opportunity to experience it.
